For individuals

What is this funding?

Individual employees represented by United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) at rural and remote worksites can apply for reimbursement of education-related costs to support their professional growth and career development.

 

Applicants are encouraged to speak with their manager if the training will require time away from scheduled shifts. RCIF approval does not automatically mean time off is approved.

APPLICATIONS OPEN APRIL 1, 2026​

Applications are open on a rolling basis through March 2028, or while funds remain available.

​

Funding Available:

  • Up to $5,000 per employee

  • Eligible courses must begin on or after March 1, 2026

  • Expenses must be submitted within 60 days of completion of the program and no later than March 1, 2028​

What can be funded?

​All costs within $5,000, including:

  • Tuition and course fees

  • Textbooks and course materials

  • Travel, mileage, meals, and accommodation related to the program​

Leave of absence (LOA)

Employees represented by UNA on a leave of absence remain eligible to apply for any RCIF funding stream.​

​

  • Applications must be submitted in accordance with the eligibility criteria for the relevant funding stream

  • Funding will be released upon the employee’s return to their former eligible position, or as approved by the RCIF committee​

Eligibility

​Applicants must complete the eligibility screening before proceeding to the application, only those who meet the eligibility requirements will be directed to the full application.

  • Applications must be an employee represented by UNA

  • Contact information for both manager and employee

  • Employee job title, employee number, employee union, and employee type

  • Provision of a functional cost centre is required (Managers should reach out to their local BAS representatives, and they would provide them with their functional centre. Employees should reach out to their managers)

  • Full-time, part-time, temporary, and benefit-eligible casual (BECE) employees are eligible

  • Applications from casual employees may be considered but they must provide additional details about their role and how the education is relevant

  • Confirmation of the worksite health zone

  • The applicant must work at a rural or remote worksite in Alberta.  Urban centres are not eligible at this time (see Rural/Remote/Urban Table)

What do you need to apply?

  • Worksite information (location, address, and department)

  • Employer name (applicants with multiple employment relationships must identify the employer they are applying under)

  • Impact Statement: Applicants must demonstrate how the education enhances their current role or career development

  • Name of the institution and program, including start and end dates

  • Contact information for the manager and employee

  • An itemized budget not exceeding $5,000

  • Applicants must confirm whether they are receiving funding from any other source for the same training. No other funding source may cover the same expenses requested from RCIF

  • Agreement to comply with all RCIF reporting requirements and complete an online survey

How to apply?

​Applications are submitted through the Good Grants portal. To get started, click the link below. You will be asked to register with the email address you want to use for your application. A verification code will be sent to that email to complete your registration.
