Retention Recognition Incentive

What is this funding?

The Retention Recognition Incentive is a one-time lump sum payment recognizing United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) members of the UNA bargaining unit who have provided service at eligible rural or remote worksites in Alberta. This incentive acknowledges the commitment and dedication of nurses who have chosen to build their careers in rural and remote communities.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!

Applications are open from May 15 to September 30, 2026, or while funds remain available.

Funding available:

Payment amounts are based on the employee's cumulative years of service with UNA at eligible RCIF rural or remote worksites. Years of service in positions outside the UNA bargaining unit do not count toward tier eligibility. Funding is paid as a one-time lump sum through payroll, within one to two pay periods of the approval letter being issued.

Note: Lump sum payments are considered taxable income and are subject to applicable federal and provincial taxes under Canadian tax law. Recipients are encouraged to consult a tax professional regarding the implications for their personal tax situation.

A one-year Return for Service (RFS) Agreement is required. The RFS commits the employee to continued service at an eligible rural or remote RCIF worksite for one year from the date of approval. Employees are obligated to notify their manager and the RCIF committee of any potential leave or departure that may affect their Return for Service Agreement.
